Focus Coaching Insight
Any Professional Coach will share with you that the biggest barrier to success is the language we use with ourselves. Most times when a coach starts working with a new client they hear "I can't because…(the Barrier)...that's what's holding me back". So a coach will ask some basic questions such as "what can you do and what steps can we take to move towards your objective?" The very first response is moving the client from the CAN'T to the CAN. This is the fundamental barrier cracker to starting down the path towards creating your success. Tell me what you CAN do not what you can't.
Focus Exercise
Stop right NOW, look at your biggest "I can't do". Write it our very clearly as you have been playing the tape in your head. The tape is your self talk telling yourself what you can't do and the various reasons why you can't. Now start a new paragraph and write down three little steps you could take to move you from Can't to Can.
Example, I always wanted to write a book. Well just write one page or 5 minutes as fast as you can write or type. It doesn't matter if it's the first, last or somewhere in the middle in the book. It doesn't matter if the book never happens. Just try the experiment and you will AMAZE yourself. Really read what you wrote. If it's not a book write a letter of gratitude to your best friend.
Pete's Perspective
On February 4 I turned the big 50. If anyone of you knows me it was time for a party and this was as good of a reason as any. Saturday night about 60 family, friends and neighbors had a grand old time. The details are a little fuzzy as one bottle of Senior " Patron" the premium tequila birthday gift was finished off by a few spirited friends as the party tapered off.
I was saying on my actual birthday that I "Can't" be turning 50 but the reality is I am as I had plenty of friends reminding me especially the other 5 that turn 50 this year. I turned my "can't" to I can and will make the most of everyday forward.
I got up in the middle of the night and reflected that I'm truly a lucky man with all the family and friends I have in my life. I remembered all those smiling and friendly faces looking back on me as I spoke before blowing out the candles on that BIG 50 cake and realizing they are all part of my own success. I'm blessed to have a great wife/ soul mate, son and step son, parents and a frolicking yellow lab. I reflected how I had two of my best friends out of six at the party and as my dad would say if you have more than a handful of true friends then you're a lucky man.
Two days later Mindy and I with two of our dear friends flew off to my favorite place on earth, Hawaii.
There is something special about Hawaii that I feel every time I get off the plane. It is the place where the mind, body and soul connect. The natural elements of water, air and fire all combined to form a true paradise in Hawaii. This is the magic most everyone feels when the get enchanted by the islands embrace to say slow down it's time to ground yourself. Many times we don't have that time for even a minute in our daily lives... As I'm writing my various books on Information Overwhelm it always occurs to me that how few chances we get to be at peace with ourselves especially in a conducive natural setting. Needless to say that work ceased and my mind, heart and soul got a chance to have fun. We visited the wonderful island of Kauai where their must be thousands of beautiful fighting roosters, hens and chicks every where you go. The grand canyon of Hawaii and the garden island was clear and 80 degree's unlike Northern California's central valley of fog, cold weather and dreary day's.
Next off was the Big Island of Hawaii itself. Even though the volcano was gushing big time the three hour hike to witness it all didn't happen. The vacations never seem to last long enough for any of us. I was blessed to see another one of my true friends and that capped off a memorable trip to the most peaceful places on earth. As the saying goes, "Take the time to smell the roses along the way". Remember that vacations are meant to be a gift you give yourself for all your hard work so that you can savior your victories and progress you made to this point in living your life. Remember your life's a journey not a destination. Make your journey as memorable as possible with the gift of vacations.
