Focus Quote

It's true that we don't know what we got until we lose it, but it's also true that we don't know what we have been missing until it arrives.
- Source unknown

Focus Coaching Insight

It use to be that we had longer periods of stability with quick periods of change in our lives. Today we are finding shorter periods of stability with longer periods of change. Change is more an everyday occurrence from watching the price of gas go up to seeing something new everyday that challenges us. I saw a t-shirt the other day that said it best, a beaver next to a pile of logs "Life is just one Dam thing after Another" It seems that everyday offers more opportunities and more challenges of what to do with those choices. A good coach will focus you on what is important in your life and to trim back the dead wood and drift wood in your life.

Focus Exercise

Take a tape measure or ruler and pull it out to how long you will live. Maybe 75 to 100 years old or more but what seems possible. Then mark with you fingers where you are now in age. Example I'm 50 and I think I will make 90 so I have 40 years if all goes well. I look that I have lived over half my life and then focus on the one thing that is my long range goal. Do the same thing for yourself for your long range goal and then write it down. Now see what your everyday events work towards that goal or take you away from that goal. Get clear about what you want and what you don't want. Write it up and then print it out to post somewhere like your computer screen to see it everyday.

Pete's Perspective

I want to share with you the journey of having our dog, Sunshine (yellow Lab) break a bone in her paw. This happened about 4 weeks ago and many dollars (who says just human medical bills can surprise you) that make interesting insights. I believe that dogs can show us how to live in the NOW. They don't think about the past or dream about the future it's all about eating, sleeping, getting attention and sex. Well it's pretty basic living with looking at what you need today.

She got a splint put on her leg to heal the break. So now we have a three legged critter that hops around the house. She doesn't have the fear about adjusting she just does and moves on with her life. Just as we discussed earlier life changes real quick in our everyday living. Her focus is to get from here to there with whatever she has. Aside from chewing up a number of bandages she and we have adjusted. I wonder if we could adjust so fast wouldn't our lives be less stressful without thinking about all the past baggage we carry around.

Mindy and I just came back from New Orleans from a coaching conference put on by the Coaching school Coachville. At the three day event we heard a number of excellent speakers. The theme was redefining leadership in our ever changing world. The common thread was that we face greater fears because of greater uncertainty in our daily lives. So we need Leaders that tell the TRUTH, are Authentic (first rate versions of themselves), have the COURAGE to face uncertainty that brings fear and lead us by example to serve others as opposed to selling or telling others how to be. The gala dinner had Mr. Jack Canfield as the speaker of the Chicken Soup for the Soul book fame. What a powerful speaker and voice to encourage us to see what is great in all of us. He talked about the 64 core principles in his newest book "The Success Principals", which is compiled from the real life insights and wisdom of various self made millionaire's, business owners, speakers, trainers and coaches. The theme in the book is to lean into your fears, step into your future and get into action because the only way your going to get what you truly want in your life if you focus on it. As the opening quote puts it so well, "you don't know what you have been missing until it arrives" Focus past your fears on the few things that are most important to you. For me that's speaking about Fear and how to move past that. I will share with you the new directions my career is focused on as the weeks, months go bye.

Keep smiling because it does even get better for all of us, Pete
