Focus Quote
"If we don't change direction soon, we'll end up where we're going."
- Professor Irwin Corey
Focus Exercise
Just as the leaves on trees are turning color and about to drop off at the end of nine months of this year, it would be wise to look at what you wanted to accomplish this year. Please do this exercise now, jotting a few things down on a pad of paper. See what you accomplished and write the top five or 10 items you executed on. What items haven't you completed yet? Now focus on getting them done by making up a schedule to accomplish them. If you take the time right now to work on completing what you have started, you won't wind up like most people do-at the end of the year and out of time. Those people also experience a sense of incompleteness and feel unbalanced and unproductive. As you achieve what you set out to do, you will finish the year with a sense of accomplishment, ready for next year. Remember that if you change your direction NOW, you will not have any unfinished business like in previous years. I'm doing this exercise right along with you!
Entrepreneur's Corner
As the captain of your ship-whether it's a one-person operation or a number of people-your vision sets the course for your crew. Now is the time to see how effectively you are performing all job responsibilities. In this exercise, take a single piece of paper, put your name on top and draw a "T" on it. On the left hand side, list all the job responsibilities you perform now. Then circle the ones you love to do, are excellent at producing results, invigorate you on a daily basis and make you the most money. The ones that don't fit, cross off and move to the right hand column. Your job is to outsource every one of those tasks in the right column to someone internal or external so you can position yourself to focus on what you do best while you ditch the rest. For those who have financial responsibilities, outsource the bookkeeping and specifically ask for whatever you need to receive periodically-an overview, reports, etc. Your assignment is to outsource as much as you need that will allow you to time to be performing at your best. You should be ready at the first of the year to have your best year yet.
Pete's Perspective
Fall is here in Northern California as I suspect it is for all of you except those in Hawaii (which stays so tropically inviting). The air is cooler, the days are shorter and the quietness of fall is here. It's the time for things to die off on the outside-like the mountain ash trees at my folks' house in Lake Tahoe that we witnessed last weekend. Before the leaves dropped, the breathtaking change of colors was in full swing from the bright yellows to the oranges and finally dark reds. Just as we arrived, the evening sun shone through the leaves creating a mystical event like nature in its full glory before the next stage of internal creation restarted. The sight made me stop and reflect how perfect this was, for I was getting ready to focus internally on creating what was inside of me. I reflected on how much I have grown and what I've accomplished this year. As I shared with you in the beginning of the ezine, I too need to focus on the unfinished goals I set for myself. The changing of the seasons reinforced this for me with the blaze of glory of the mountain ash.
Recently I was rudely reminded of how when we don't make ourselves the highest priority in our lives, we fall to nature's balance with a knock in the head, heart-stopping results and an urgent message to review our situation. A dear friend had to be taken to the hospital due to shortness of breath and was unable to move around in everyday living. Once he was checked out, he found out that he was in pretty bad shape to the point he had to go through extensive testing. The doctors scheduled him for a six-point bypass with the nurses seeing a walking dead man. Luckily Alan had the operation and is now recovering. He has been given the chance of living the next chapter of his life. His gift to me was to lose that extra 100 pounds or have to face some kind of crisis as he did. In the meantime, one of my former employees also suffered a massive heart attack. Since these two people close to me were in their 40s and 50s, it has been a wake-up call. Part of this going deep inside is to find what is most important for me. I read recently that between 40 and 60 is the time when the dreams we harbor for ourselves die if they are not realized. Now more than ever is the time to figure out how to make the dreams thrive that I have harbored inside for so long.
My eBook and workbook have been reshaped with the help of my mastermind group going from a marketing book to the foundation book, kind of a pre-marketing book called "Discover Your True Value." Final editing is happening this week, and then on to the Website and free teleclasses, then the six-week teleclass course. Watch for further information in an upcoming ezine. I leave you while eating cottage cheese and turkey slices and eating six times a day. I thank my friend for showing me that taking care of myself is job #1, and I feel grateful I was able to talk to him yesterday and reflect on what is most important in my life.
Hugs, Pete
